“Whether I know… that I am one of God’s
people… or not, if the Lord knows it, I am still safe.” (Charles
H. Spurgeon, Morning by Morning, January 5
entry for the evening.)
How encouraging.
As I have lived in grief these past months, how I have responded to the loss of Anne has [...]
Moving on.
I’m not ready to do it, but I know I must.
I’ve always been a bit of a “word nerd”, so I tend to sift the words that I use. The phrase “moving on” begs to be sifted. Am I contemplating moving on from something? For I surely do not want to do [...]
Tears.
After Anne’s homegoing, “life after death” began for me, and one of its biggest ingredients was tears. Telephone calls came in from people who tried not to cry, but couldn’t help themselves. Friends who would see me for the first time since it happened would tear up and hug me. Co-workers would try and [...]
Morning.
Of course, I should have been exhausted. And I’m sure that I was — but I was too numb to notice. There is this thing called “pre-grieving”, which had begun for me in church the day before. It is the phenomenon of beginning to mourn the loss before the loved one dies. This was [...]

Palm Sunday Morning, March 28th, 2010.
“Honey, between the trip and last week’s exhausted stay-home decision, we haven’t been to church in a while. But, I can see how much you’re struggling: do you want to stay home this morning?”
“No. I don’t. But, let’s see how I feel after a shower.”
I got dressed [...]
Short and to the point. Anne’s experiencing pain, now, and it is not always responding to her meds. Her doctors have made many adjustments to her drug regimen, but there’s still pain.
Please pray for the easing of this pain and for an extra portion of grace to be given to Anne, to help [...]
“Just when you thought there couldn’t be more scenery, there it is!”
“There’s an entire basketball team staying in our hotel tonight. We better get down to the complimentary breakfast early!”
“Enjoy your dam tour!”

Today, we decided to visit the Mission of San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). We’re both familiar with it from the movie “Vertigo” (Alfred Hitchcock). Hitch photographed it beautifully, but, when you actually go there, [...]
